The best way to make such a draft is to make an outline, in which all the ideas of the essay will be assembled in a proper order and make all together one logical professional essay. If the topic for the essay is not assigned by the instruction it is first of all necessary to chose one general topic for the whole paper. A good 5-paragraph essay requires a strong thesis statement and corresponding topic sentences. Topic sentences are sentences, which add more to the thesis statement, and each is opened in a separate paragraph of the essay. Together with the introduction and conclusion paragraphs make 5 paragraphs. A 5-paragraph essay also must be supported with adequate supportive sources.
Throughout its history humankind asked itself this question and constantly tried to answer “no”. The idea of sentient living beings who are not people is present in writings of historians, geographers and other scientists for as long as the science itself exists. Mermaids, cynocephali, various bizarre species of beastmen, antipodes: all of them were embodiments of this dream. In course of time, the limits of the known Universe expanded and it became known that no such creatures existed. The only place to seek for non-human life now is other planets. Is there any hope for finding it?
So, this is an important discussion. I really did think the 5-paragraph essay had been torched and buried long ago. However, during my last writing unit I found that’s exactly what I was teaching. This is what happens when you feel compelled to follow a script, even when you know better! So, how not to do this or how to teach this as one of many ways to write an essay? That will be part of the classroom research I am planning to do this semester as I plunge into our next unit on argument writing with research. By teaching the 5-paragraph essay as one way, though not the best way, to write essays I can cover myself AND still teach my students well. I will be writing alongside my students, which will be an eye-opener. I am hopefully going to stay one step ahead…I am planning to blog about it starting this week, so if you’d like to start a conversation with me come over to my blog at . This comment may well be my first post about this topic. Thanks, Brian for getting the conversation started.
